Training and Assessment

ATHRA training and assessment scheme

The following ATHRA training courses are now available to ATHRA financial members and can be used immediately:

  • Steam Locomotive Driver
  • Steam Locomotive Fireman
  • Diesel Locomotive Driver
  • Railmotor Driver.

Each heritage railway is responsible for the administration of the theory training, the theory off job assessment and the on job training. Guidance documents are available to assist training managers through this process – Contact Steve Deveson, ATHRA National Training and Assessment Coordinator at

Once satisfied all the necessary training activities and documents are complete the heritage operator training manager needs to send an Application for Assessment to the ATHRA Records Officer.

ATHRA assessors then conduct an assessment of the candidate.  The competency certificates are issued by the ATHRA records officer after his satisfaction (or in the case of any doubt – the Training and Assessment coordinator)  that the paperwork and processes have been followed.  The ATHRA certificate is sent to the nominated Training Manager at the Heritage Railway who is then responsible for handing the original Certificate to the individual.”

Trainees can be assessed for competence any time after 1/9/18 . We are still finalising the courses for guard, safeworking, signaller and diesel locomotive fireman.

ATHRA Board and State contacts

The ATHRA Board comprises both your elected State coordinators and  seconded specialists – see for board member contact details under the contact us menu option.

The current board is working hard and focussed on delivering real benefits to the members through our working groups.  The current key areas of activity are Training, Insurance, Accreditation and Engineering.  Other working groups are being established for IT, Tramways and Constitution Review.

This blog will keep you up to date with progress in all areas and is available for any individual to join.  We encourage ATHRA members to get their own boards and management teams connected to ensure they make full use of the available ATHRA support.
